Winners of the Best Open Lesson Competition in frames of the Safer Internet Armenia 2013 project have been announced and awarded on April 18:

Anahit Melkoumyan, the Yerevan High School No. 198;

Lernuhi Meliqyan, the Berd High School of the Tavush province;

Armine Azatyan, the Koghb Secondary School No. 1 of the Tavush province;

Kristine Mkhitaryan, the Yeghegnadzor High School;

Alvard Saroyan, the Yerevan Secondary School No. 100;

Anahit Baghdasaryan, the Vanadzor Secondary School No. 24 after G. Chaush;

Nune Galstyan, the Yerevan Secondary School No. 129 and

Asya Gasparyan, the Maisyan Secondary School of the Armavir province.

Media Education Center, as a part of the European NGO Alliance for Child Safety On-line eNACSO, participated in the 1st Children’s Forum in ICANN held in April 6-12, 2013 in Beijing.

Students of the Yerevan-based Anania Shirakatsy Lyceum, recognized the best school in frames of Safer Internet Armenia 2012 Project, received the opportunity to attend the Children's Forum.

Armenian delegates, Eva Musaelyan, Arman Tsirunyan and Lily Saroyan presented their opinions about Internet issues and policies related to them. Children participated in meetings and public forum, discussed and formulated points of new child protection policies in connection to child-related new gTLDs, addressed the ICANN public with the Declaration, spoke to the President and CEO of ICANN Fadi Chehadé.

The Children’s Forum was organized alongside with ICANN 46th International meeting and gathered 10 children's groups and child-led organizations from all over the world.

دأبت المجتمعات البشرية من الأزل على أن تتكيف وتتطور مع البيئة المحيطة بها، وكانت دائما هذه المجتمعات تحاول أن تستفيد من الأدوات المتوفرة لها لكي ترتقي إنسانيا واقتصاديا واجتماعيا.

لا يخفى على الجميع إن العصر الذي نعيش فيه هو عصر تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات بدون منازع، وان الانترنت يعتبر النواة التي تنطلق منها كل التطبيقات التكنولوجية في عصرنا الراهن، حيث أصبح الانترنت جزءا رئيسا من حياة الأفراد لا يمكن الاستغناء عنه على مختلف فئاتهم العمرية والاجتماعية حتى أصبحت الحياة الافتراضية على الفضاء التخيلي موازية ومكملة للحياة الموجودة على ارض الواقع.

إن الانترنت قدم للبشرية فوائد جمة لا يمكن إحصائها، حيث حول العالم إلى قرية صغيرة مترابطة مع بعضها البعض والمعلومات أصبحت متوفرة بدرجة كبيرة مما زاد من رقي المجتمع وتحوله تدريجيا من مجتمع معلوماتي إلى مجتمع معرفي، بالمقابل فأن هذا الانفتاح والترابط أدى إلى ظهور تهديدات أمنية جمة قد تحول الانترنت من وسيلة لخدمة البشر إلى أداة قد تسبب أضرار لا يحمد عقباها مثل سرقة المعلومات الشخصية والاحتيال والاستغلال.

إن العالم قد تنبه إلى تلك المخاطر والإضرار، لذلك ظهرت دعوات تحاول أن تقدم الوعي حول تلك المخاطر وظهرت الكثير من المبادرات بخصوص هذا الموضوع، اليوم العالمي لأمن الانترنت يعتبر واحد من أهم تلك المبادرات وقد اكتسب أهمية كبيرة عبر مرور السنوات.

بدأ اليوم العالمي لأمن الانترنت كمشروع في الاتحاد الأوربي عام 2004، وقد تم تفعيل هذا اليوم عام 2005 وأصبحت عدد الدول التي تشارك وتحتفل بهذا اليوم أكثر من 90 دولة منتشرة في ست من قارات العالم. المزيد من المعلومات حول هذا اليوم موجودة على الموقع التالي Saferinternetday.org

أن مملكة البحرين حاولت أن تكون جزءا رئيسيا من هذا الحدث العالمي المهم عن طريق إقامة الندوات والفعاليات التي توعي المواطنين بخصوص هذا اليوم، ففي العام الماضي أقيمت ندوة بمركز الأيام الإعلامي حول هذا اليوم بعنوان "لنقرب الأجيال ونتعلم من بعضنا بعضا" وقد تم التركيز على أن الفئة التي يجب أن يتم التركيز على استهدافها هم صغار السن، بالمقابل تم التأكيد على ضرورة تعاون القطاعين العام والخاص بخصوص هذا الموضوع عن طريق نشر الثقافة حول هذا اليوم.

وفي هذه السنة تم اختيار يوم 21 فبراير موعدا لانطلاق فعاليات اليوم العالمي لأمن الانترنت في مملكة البحرين، ومن المقرر أقامة عدد من الفعاليات والندوات تهدف الى توعية الأفراد وطلبة المدارس بخصوص مخاطر الانترنت والسبل المثلى لاستخدامه بطريقة أمنة.

نتمنى للجميع الاستخدام الأمن للانترنت، وكذلك المساهمة الفعالة في نشر الثقافة والوعي بخصوص هذا الموضوع ونسأل الله التوفيق للجميع.

Study conducted with youth on the use of ICT in Latin America

ECPAT International youth-led study from Latin America on the linkages between the use of the Internet and the commercial sexual exploitation of children.

This innovative regional study, led by children and young people from Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Uruguay and Chile, identified the increasing violation of children’s rights and the need for greater protection measures to prevent the negative impact of further advancement of technologies on children’s lives.

ECPAT congratulates the INSAFE network for a very successuful 10th edition of the Safer Internet Day

ECPAT and its network members are very happy and proud to take part in the 10th edition of the Safer Internet Day event organised by the INSAFE network.

The theme for this year's event : Online rights and responsibilities is a very pertinent one as Internet and communication tools becomes mainstreamed in the lives of children. Often they are given separate messages to deal with online and offline worlds and sometimes we forget that the online world mirrors the characteristics and nuances of our physical world. What is relevant in the physical world (protection of privacy, individual identity and self respect and respect for others ) is equally applicable to the online world. But unfortunately, sometimes we as adults tend to consider the online world as a place where anything can be said or done, without witnessing or being impacted with immediate consequences of our actions.

As we move on towards empowering children and young people to take advantage of the enormous potential of the online world, it is important to keep in mind that we equip them with the same knowledge that we provide them with in the offline world , but going further to make sure that they do not fall prey to the risky situations the online world might present, due to its apparent anonymity and fast natured communications which takes place in such rapidity that it sometimes obscures rational thinking.

We can truly build a global village when we all learn to: "Connect with respect"

We encourage all children and young people to enjoy the opportunities offered by the Internet and communication technologies, be it through a traditional computer or through a mobile phone or any other ICT enabled device, irrespective of their nationality, location and economic status.

To this end we hope the Safer Internet Day will continue to drive the efforts globally to create awareness, build understanding of the risks and how to address them while promoting the safer use of the Internet and help duty bearers create and develop the necessary framework required to protect children from any forms of exploitation while they enjoy this space.

ECPAT publishes study on the use of ICT by children and young people in Africa

Understanding African children’s use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is a youth-led study conducted by ECPAT International in Cameroon, Gambia, Kenya, Togo and Uganda to provide insight into how children in Africa are using ICTs and the risks this poses.

Children in Africa are increasingly using the Internet and ICT tools at home, schools and public spaces, but receive poor guidance to ensure their safety online. The understanding of parents, teachers and cybercafe operators regarding the risks and harms that can be caused, particularly in relation to sexual exploitation, is rather basic and insufficient to effectively protect children.

Studies to assess children’s vulnerabilities and the risks arising from their online presence — particularly their increasing familiarity with social networking sites (Facebook, Mxit etc.), file sharing and downloads — are rare. The fact that the reach and number of ICTs are continuing to increase and develop poses further challenges, particularly in the African context, where there is no historical knowledge or mechanisms to understand emerging risks and develop counteractions. A significant gap is the lack of indication about the numbers and the specific groups of children who may have been victimised or are at-risk of receiving sexual solicitations, luring by traffickers for sexual purposes, being exposed to depictions of sexual violence and child pornography, not to mention the extent to which African children are represented in the global child abuse image transactions.

This newly published ECPAT International research project seeks to address gaps in knowledge to assist in the design of suitable interventions and to alert policy makers and relevant private sector actors of the need to commit resources and develop plans to ensure the full protection of children. Although this report is not designed to provide accurate numbers pertaining to the above, it does shed light on the trends and patterns of ICT use by children and offers an insight into vulnerabilities which children face.

Safer Internet Day in Taiwan

ECPAT Taiwan hosted a press conference to celebrate the 10^th Safer Internet day today, with the support from Taiwanese governors, legislators and ISPs, to raise public awareness for Internet Safety for our children. In the conference, our legislator Ms. Yu-Min Wang and Mr. Yi-Kang Tuan advocated of the online rights and responsibilities for our children, there are also representatives from Taiwanese government, such as National Communications Commission, Ministry of Education, Child Welfare Bureau, and private companies like China Telecom, Yahoo, PC home, Microsoft Taiwan and Yam to support the concept of Safer Internet Day.

SID 2013 in Armenia: Orange Advocates Safer Internet Use

Today over 100 countries are celebrating Safer Internet Day. This year Orange Armenia, Media Education Center, Internet Society of Armenia launched the Safer Internet Armenia project.

In frames of the Safer Internet Armenia 2013 over 300 teachers from 150 schools will be trained and over 3000 students will take part in open lessons on Internet safety. This year a special attention is paid to engaging parents, who will take part in numerous workshops held in Armenia's capital city and regions. On the Safer Internet Day 2013 the Best Open Lesson and the Best e-Poster Competitions are announced among school children and teachers.

“As the major mobile internet provider in Armenia, we care about providing our customers with keys to safe internet use, protecting their information and hardware as well as their children from inappropriate content. However, we are not limiting ourselves to simply offering needed products and solutions and as a responsible company we are happy to join this large-scale educational project,” said Francis Gelibter, the CEO of Orange Armenia.

Orange Armenia has been advocating safer internet use since last year. The company has supported workshops and awareness raising campaigns and provided its customers with Kaspersky Internet Security Labs in cooperation with Kaspersky to protect children from inappropriate content online. Many Orange customers are already using it.

“More and more children start using internet at an earlier age. Still, children under 12 do not have proper critical thinking skills to make choices when surfing, playing and learning on the Internet, therefore parents are advised to participate in their internet activities,” Narine Khachatryan, Deputy Director of the Media Education Center, said.

Studies show those teenagers whose families do not set rules for internet use at home are twice more likely to access web sites with inappropriate content. All those concerned about the content their children are exposed to on the Internet can visit www.safe.am to find necessary information and educational resources in Armenian language.

Safer Internet Day is part of a global drive by awareness-raising partners to promote a safer and better internet for all users, especially young people. It is organised by Insafe and INHOPE in the framework of the European Commission’s Safer Internet Programme, working together to deliver a safer internet, promoting safe, responsible use of the internet and mobile devices to children, young people and their families, and working to identify and remove illegal content online. SID 2013: Our Activities For Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day (SID) is organized each year in February by INSAFE, a European Network of Awareness Centres promoting safe, responsible use of the Internet and mobile devices, especially amongst children and young people across the world. The 5^th edition of the Safer Internet Day will be celebrated on 5^th February 2013 in Mauritius. The theme for this year’s SID is “Online Rights and Responsibilities”.

On this occasion, the National Computer Board (NCB) will be organising the following activities:

As the United States representative in the Insafe network and a proud supporter of Safer Internet Day, i-SAFE congratulates the Insafe team on the occasion of SID’s 10th anniversary.
Produced specifically for this occasion, i-SAFE is making available a lesson to our subscribing districts/schools in the United States that empowers students to think globally about the online issue of online rights and responsibilities – which is the theme of SID 2013.

The lesson, Online Freedoms and the Culture of the Internet Community, is easily adaptable to accommodate students in elementary, middle or high school. A vital outcome of the lesson is for students to have the opportunity to express “what online rights and responsibilities mean to them.” Students can express themselves however they want: write an essay, shoot a video, draw a cartoon, compose a song, create a sock puppet show, design a poster, or something else. Students who want to share their thoughts about online rights and responsibilities and their work with the world on the Safer Internet Day USA page. It will be interesting what American students come up with!

Forum theatre

Street action will be organized in Nis to mark SID on February 5, 2013. At noon, Open Club Nis members will perform a part of their forum theatre performance where online predator finally catches his victim, and carry banners with Internet safety rules advising passers-by not to share their passwords with other people, to carefully chose chat partners, not to share their personal data and not to meet their unknown online friends in the real world alone. Click Safely site will be promoted as well. Passers-by will be given promo materials and invited to take part in a short computer game to test their Internet safety knowledge.

Association of IT Professors getting involved

Primary School “Desanka Maksimovic” from Cokot near the City of Nis in Southern Serbia, joined by the Serbian Association of IT Professors (UPIS), will celebrate Safer Internet Day on February 5, 2013 in Cokot and in its satellite school in Novo Selo village. Fliers containing Internet safety rules and online threats, designed and produced by UPIS, will be handed out to school children and their parents and caretakers. Upper grades’ pupils who are members of the Internet Club (a highly popular extra curriculum activity in this Primary School) will make a presentation for their peers on Internet safety. UPIS members from Aleksinac who work as teachers in primary schools in Aleksinac and nearby places will pay a visit to “Desanka Maksimovic“ School to take part in their educational programme. In other towns and schools in Serbia, UPIS members will also mark the international Safer Internet Day. Within the regular school curriculum in February, an interactive presentation followed by discussion will be organized in Primary School “Desanka Maksimovic“ on different forms of addiction, with special focus on addition to Internet and social networking. The event will be organized and presented jointly by the school psychologists, teachers and peer educators. Belgrade based C31 - Center for Child Rights Development, a partner organization of Fund B92 in the implementation of NGO Response to Online Child Abuse and Exploitation in Serbia Project, funded by Save the Children International, has joined in the Safer Internet Day celebration, and has planned educational and promotional activities that they would like to carry out in a specially designed stand in an adequate place within the Plaza Shopping Mall in Kragujevac. This stand will be a place in which children, young shoppers and their parents will gather to learn in an amusing and fun way the rules of Internet safety while making the traditional origami game of chatterbox, which for this special occasion becomes a learning tools on Internet and IT safety. C31 team members will use this opportunity to chat with the visitors and to hand out promo and info materials and orally disseminate the rules on how to protect their privacy and thus fully enjoy the numerous benefits of Internet and IT technologies in general.

Ivan Novakovic will organize promotional and educational activities in Mladenovac and Arandjelovac, Serbia. In two local shopping malls, Ivan Novakovic will disseminate information on Internet safety rules and hand out promotional materials for children (traditional Origami game of chatterbox). This will be an opportunity to spread the word about the workshops and interactive lectures for children and parents, about the Online Learning Platform available to all primary and secondary schools in Serbia, and about the Click Safely Safer Internet Center Serbia Project, which started on January 1, 2013. Children and their parents will be invited to visit the Click Safely Internet site and to play and learn about Internet safety together. Activities in Mladenovac are scheduled to take place in TCM shopping mall, from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m., after which the promoters will go to the nearby town of Arandjelovac and continue their promotional activities in shopping mall Fortuna, from 2 p.m. till 6 p.m..

Novi Sad based Centre for Youth Deviant Behavior Prevention - Target will join in the Safer Internet Day celebration: in cooperation with the Municipality of Savski Venac, Target Centre will organize two educational workshops on safer Internet use for teachers from local schools on February 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m.. Savski Venac Municipality is the first Belgrade Municipality that initiated educational activities on safer Internet use and provided for educational workshops and interactive lecturers for pupils and students, parents, teachers and psychologists working with primary and secondary schools' children from the local schools. Since 2011, Target Centre successfully cooperates with Fund B92 in implementation of Save the Children International funded NGO Response to Online Child Abuse and Exploitation in Serbia Project. It organizes workshops and interactive lectures for primary school pupils, their parents and teachers in northern Serbian province of Vojvodina.

Belgrade base “Stevan Dukic” Primary School took an active part in educational program on safe Internet use. So far, the School has assisted its pupils in dealing with issues such as cyberbullying, personal data protection, etc., and on this particular occasion they will get additional support from Fund B92 and “Click Safely” Campaign. Youth Centre from Timok Region in Serbia will organize Safer Internet Day celebration on February 5, 2013 in the town of Zajecar in Southern Serbia. Two separate film screening events will be organized for primary school pupils and high school students, to show “Tagged” and the film about Amanda Todd, a girl that committed suicide to end cyber bullying campaign by her friends. After the screenings, activists of the Zajecar based Youth Centre will hand out promo materials (badges, stickers, pencils and magnets) with rules on Internet safety. Brochures will be handed out to parents, containing instructions on how to help their children and where to look for assistance and information, so that the Internet use can be a positive and pleasant, as well as educational experience.

Safer Internet Day (SID) is organised annually in February to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world. The main organiser is an organisation called Insafe, which is a European network of Awareness Centres co-funded by the Safer Internet Programme of the European Commission.

CyberSAFE, a programme by CyberSecurity Malaysia, is the official partner of Insafe and the Safer Internet Programme for Malaysia since 2010.

Safe Internet Day 2013 (SID2013) will be celebrated on the 5^th February 2013 throughout the world, with the theme “Online Rights and Responsibility” and slogan, “Connect with Respect”. It is the 10th Safer Internet Day in Europe and the 4^th for Malaysia.

This year’s, our run-up to the Safe Internet Day celebration in Malaysia started early. In December 2012, we launched an online competition via the Facebook page of CyberSecurity Malaysia, where participants are required to design posters based on the theme and slogan of SID2013 and videos based on online safety issues that are affecting children and young adults namely cyber-bullying, cyber-grooming, child-pornography, cyber-stalking, and identity theft. The competition will be closed on 15^th February 2013 for the poster and 28^th February for the video, which will be followed by the online voting until 28^th February for the poster designs and 15^th March for the videos.

And this coming 3^rd February 2013 we will be launching the CyberSAFE Quiz on eBaca Magazine during the Karangkraf Carnival. Usually Safer Internet Day is a month-long affair, filled with CyberSAFE activities especially designed for school children and young adults. This year’s SID2013 will be a year-long affair due to our collaboration with eBaca, a popular dual-language magazine published by the Karangkraf Media Group. CyberSAFE and eBaca will be holding several joint activities to educate the readers of e-Baca on cyber safety and the positive use of internet; which we hope will achieve the following:

· Raise a general public awareness on cyber security
· Provide cyber security-related information, the type of cyber threats and ways to prevent from becoming a victim of cyber crime.
· Nurture and instill caution and curiosity when being in cyberspace.
· Educate the young readers about the importance of cyber security during their early years, i.e. when they are just beginning to use the Internet.

The Safer Internet Day 2013 activities in Portugal will be promoted by all the consortium members and will take place all over the country.

SeguraNet week In Schools Initiative.

The awareness node for the Portuguese Schools (SeguraNet) will be promoting, between the 4th and the 8th of February, activities that engage all the school community and students' families accordingly to the theme «Online Rights and Responsabilities: Connect with respect». For this, a special webpage was created http://www.seguranet.pt/semana2013 so that the school community can find most of the resources and awareness tools produced by the consortium destined to children, teenagers, teachers, parents and educators. At the same time schools can report their initiatives, creating a dynamic agenda of the whole week activities. Sugestions and tutorials on initiatives and activities are also available.

Safer Internet Seminar for Schools

On the 5th of February a Seminar destined to children and young people will be held at the auditorium of the Professional School of Turism where the consortium will present the work of the project's within the school community as well as thetre plays and conclusions driven from the work of the Youth Panel.

SID Microsoft Volunteer Scheme 2013

Microsoft will lead on the 5th of February the partnership Microsoft Volunteer Scheeme, that will gather more than 100 volunteers from private institutions to perform Internet Safety training sessions in schools, a work that counts with the envolvement of portuguese municipalities.

SID 2013 on the ICT & Society Network

The Foundation for Science and Technology FCT prepared a Kit with resources and tutorials for the development of awareness and training initiatives all over the country, sending an invitation to all of the members of the ICT & Society Network constituted by the Telecentre Network, public libraries, NGO's, Digital Inclusion Centres, School Libraries Network, municipalities amongst other institution that work towards the improvement of digital literacy. This iniciative will take place between the 4th and the 16th of February. On the last day, the consortium will mark this Iniciative with a Seminar on Internet Safety destined for Parents.

IPDJ Safer Internet Day Competition

The Portuguese Institute for Sports and Youth will lauch a competition on the SID Day that will mobilizing all the Youth Stores Network and the 1250 Youth Associations in the country, as well as the thousands of yougsters that receive their newsletter. They will have to answer a question based on the SID 2013 Theme and then receive a Prize pack.

Broadcast and Magazines

Following the need to extend the message of safe Internet behaviour to broader publics, the Safer Internet Centre created a partnership with the NGO BuéFixe! that develops its activities on HIV prevention and immigrant support amongst the african-portuguese population, mainly yougsters. The SID 2013 will mark the first cooperation with a spread on their online magazine and a participation in their radio show (popular not only in Portugal, but all of the portuguese speaking african countries).

Another spread on the SID 2013 and the work of the Safer Internet Centre will appear in the TVMais and Telenovas magazines, the main TV trivia and Sopa Opera publications in the country.
