Nigeria Safer Internet Day Committee - International Centre for Leadership Development Nigeria

Last updated: 2023-12-07

About our SID activities

We have begun organising several internet safety-related events for students, stakeholders, teachers, parents, caregivers, and government agencies in honour of Safer Internet Day (SID) in 2024. We are also working with groups in other states. To ensure a safer and better internet for everyone, we will be putting together a campaign aimed at citizens throughout Nigeria to raise awareness of the positive and negative uses of the Internet. Moreover, we'll provide tips on internet safety on our social media channels.

Participants will receive a copy of our Executive Director's book untitled Cybercrime: Awareness and Prevention, to help them understand the risks associated with online scammers and how to avoid falling victim to one.
Furthermore, we will host an event in selected high schools in some states across Nigeria. We seek partnerships to help us to reach a wider audience

What we are doing to support the SID 2024 slogan of "Together for a better internet"

We will ask our online followers to express their opinions on how we can all work together to improve the internet by being safe online. Additionally, we will ask our state coordinators to provide input on how each state promotes awareness. A quiz competition will be part of the celebrations for teens, and representatives from several schools will speak about how they are improving the internet.

About us

The International Center for Leadership Development Nigeria (ICLDNG), in the last few years, has been at the forefront in advocacy for safer internet usage and working against cybercrime among Nigerian youth. With about 60 per cent of Nigeria's total population being young and mobile penetration in the country being around 40 per cent, mobile devices are fast bridging the internet accessibility gap among youth in the country. The ever-growing population of youth who, for too long, has been neglected by the government can now empower themselves using their internet-enabled smartphones. However, for this empowerment to occur, they need proper direction on how to positively use the technologies available to them.

At ICLDNG, we are working with various stakeholders to create a platform to raise purposeful young leaders in Nigeria by leveraging technology, helping teenagers to develop the digital skills they need to stay safe online and repositioning their mindset, thereby using the internet in a positive way. We have hosted several workshops in eight states across Nigeria.
