World Vision MEER Safer Internet Day Supporter Safer Internet Day 2013Keeping Children Safe Online: the project World Vision’s “Keeping Children Safe Online” project began in Armenia and Lebanon in 2009 with the launch of multimedia tools and resources that promote safer internet usage. The programme trained trainers as well as children, so that the knowledge and skills could be shared through school and other community meetings. The resources were contextualized and translated into English, Armenian and Arabic. In 2010, World Vision partnered with Insafe to build on the best safer internet practices and tools, as well as to learn from, and collaborate, with other European Union Safer Internet Centres. In 2011, World Vision expanded the programme through its offices in Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Jerusalem-West Bank-Gaza and in 2012 in Albania, which will bring the number of languages in which the project is available to seven. To date, the project has reached more than 5,612 children, 4,845 parents and 2,700 teachers through training and peer-to-peer projects that help keep children and youth safe online. Activities have included street fairs, school video competitions, round table discussions, debates and youth workshop with new tools constantly being developed such as distance learning courses and 3 safer internet web sites. Hotlines and e-Helplines have been set up in cooperation with existing child protection NGO’s and Ministries, providing a referral and reporting system with information and advice through chat and/or mail counseling to children and young adults encountering online problems.
